A SCULPTURAL STAIR BLENDING ART, CRAFT AND ENGINEERING

A SCULPTURAL STAIR BLENDING ART, CRAFT AND ENGINEERING

In the heart of a private Texas ranch, a sculptural staircase rises four stories, seamlessly connecting the home to a rooftop deck with sweeping views of post-oak landscapes and the owners' prized horses. More than just a means of vertical movement, this staircase became a defining architectural element—a fusion of artistry, engineering, and the personal passions of those who call this place home.

Inspired by lighthouses' industrial strength and timeless elegance, the design balances function with intricate craftsmanship. Wrought iron forms the core structure, while detailed bronze accents add warmth and refinement. Two custom finials, created as tributes to the owners’ deep appreciation for horses, bring a personal touch—one classically understated, the other capturing the dynamic grace of equine movement. Achieving this level of sculptural precision required an in-depth study of equine anatomy, ensuring that every curve and muscle reflected the lifelike energy of a galloping horse.

Every tread had to be engineered with surgical precision. Every connection—some visible, many hidden—had to blend seamlessly into the whole. We worked on it for nearly eight months in our Atelier in Colombia, piece by piece. Then we disassembled it, shipped it across borders and deserts, and reassembled it once more, deep in the Texas countryside.

Every curve of the stair was developed through an iterative process of drawing, digital modeling, and physical fabrication. Maintaining the fluid sweep of the stair’s geometry required a deep understanding of how metal behaves under heat, pressure, and gravity. Each tread, railing segment, and structural element had to respond both to the aesthetic vision and to the engineering demands of a structure rising four full stories.

The railing itself becomes a continuous sculptural line that guides the ascent, flowing upward in a controlled rhythm that echoes the circular geometry of the stair.
The result is a form that feels both dynamic and grounded, anchored by craftsmanship while animated by movement.

Behind the sculptural presence lies a rigorous technical achievement. One of the project’s most complex requirements was the precise alignment of the stair with a cylindrical glass elevator that would be installed later in the construction process. The geometry of both elements had to coexist perfectly within a shared spatial envelope.

OUR

TIMELESS

ARTISTRY

This piece demanded patience. For almost two years, our craftsmen shaped, tested, and refined every element in the atelier until the entire spiral felt perfect, as if it had always belonged together.

When we finally assembled it in Texas, four stories high, the structure revealed its true character: strong, quiet, and completely at home within the architecture.”

Turning challenges into art

Maintaining the elegance of the stair’s curvature while respecting these constraints required a constant dialogue between digital precision and hands-on craft. Components were refined repeatedly in the atelier and then adjusted again during installation, meeting the exacting demands of the architecture. The remote location of the ranch added another layer of complexity, as every stage of fabrication, transport, and on-site assembly required careful planning and coordination.
In total, more than 14,000 hours of skilled craftsmanship were invested in the creation of the staircase. Those hours reflect decades of accumulated knowledge in working with metal, understanding its limits, and guiding it into forms that balance strength with elegance. The finished installation now rises as a defining architectural gesture within the home, where engineering precision and artisanal craft come together in a structure that feels both powerful and effortlessly integrated into its surroundings.
